Abstract
Introduction: With age, the body will physically experience a decline in performance, things like muscle strength and endurance, joint mobility, balance, etc., and sports science seeks to slow down these changes, one of which is an invitation to exercise and physical activity. In this regard, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of functional exercise training on motivation to participate in the elderly's exercise classes.
Method: This study is a semi-experimental study in terms of purpose and data collection method in which the subjects were divided into two experimental and control groups with 20 people and the data were analyzed by analysis of covariance. The data collection tool was sport motivation questionnaire Gil et al. (1983). The statistical population consisted of elderly men in Tehran province that 40 people were selected by available sampling method, 20 of whom were divided into control group and 20 others in experimental group. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance using SPSS software.
Results: Based on the results of covariance analysis, it can be said that the exercise training in the functional method does not have any significant effect on the motivation to participate in the exercise classes of the elderly, because the results of data analysis show (P ˃0.05).
Conclusion: According to the results, it can be stated that exercise training in the functional way does not have any significant effect on the motivation to participate in the exercise classes of the elderly, and it is better to consider the special conditions of the elderly including old age and the loss of their desired mood, sports science experts look for other ways to attract the elderly to sports clubs and exercises.
