The effect of different sports trainings and physical activity in women with Sjögren's syndrome: a systematic review

Abstract
Background and purpose: Regular exercise and resistance training improves the health status of women with this syndrome by increasing aerobic capacity and quality of life. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of different sports trainings and physical activity in women with Sjögren's syndrome.
Materials and methods: In the present study, the studies published from 2003 to 2023 on the effects of sports trainings and physical activity in women with Sjögren's syndrome were analyzed. In this study, Latin articles were found using keywords dryness syndrome, training, resistance training, Sjögren's syndrome, fatigue in Pubmed, web of science and Scopus databases. The inclusion criteria of the research for the selected articles were that they were published in scientific-research or valid journals and were about the effect of sports training in women with Sjogren's syndrome. In the initial search, 954 articles were found, which 163 duplicate articles were removed. In the second part of screening, based on the inclusion criteria, 782 articles unrelated to the subject were also excluded from the scope of the review, and finally, based on the standard principles and the title of the present study, the current study was done with 9 articles.
Results: According to the studies, different types of sports trainings such as resistance training could improve functional capacity, aerobic capacity, general health status, vitality, social aspects, and mental health. Also, a moderate to highly intensive exercise program could improve aerobic capacity, fatigue, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), anxiety and depression. In addition, a well-tolerated resistance training effectively improved fatigue, pain, functional capacity, emotional aspects, vitality, and subjective perception of disease activity.
Conclusion: The present review indicates that resistance training, aerobic exercise and walking increases aerobic capacity and quality of life in women with Sjögren's syndrome.
