Abstract
Abstract
Background: The superiority of the external focus of attention over the internal focus of attention has been repeatedly reported in most past studies. However, due to the fact that it may not be possible to distinguish external cues in some skills, recently some researchers have mentioned the holistic focus of attention as an alternative to the external focus of attention.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different internal, external and holistic focus of attention on the vertical jump performance in skilled karate athletes.
Method: The method of this research was semi-experimental. Participants were 30 skilled karate athletes (all female, Meanage = 21.06 ± 1.75 years) who were selected among the skilled karate practitioners of Ahvaz city and performed the vertical jump task in four focus of attention conditions (internal, external, holistic focus of attention and control condition; 12 trials at all; 3 trails in each condition). In order to analyze data, descriptive statistics methods as well as parametric inferential statistics such as repeated measurement ANOVA along with Bonferroni follow-up test were used in SPSS software version 26.
Results: The results of the study showed that the vertical jump performance of skilled karate athletes in both conditions of external focus of attention (mean=32.95) and holistic focus of attention (mean=33.21) was superior to internal focus of attention (mean=30.40, p=0.02, 001/001 p=0001 respectively) and control (mean=30.71, p=0.001, p=0.002 respectively) and no significant difference was found between other conditions.
Conclusion: In general, it can be concluded that external and holistic focus of attention are effective on the vertical jump performance of skilled karate athletes, and it is suggested to the coaches to use external and holistic focus of attention for better performance of their karate athletes' vertical jump.
