Abstract
Negative stereotype or stereotype threat is sociocognitive-affective variable and it happens when the behavior and performance of a group is exposed to negative judgment, due to stereotypical beliefs about that the particular group (Steele and Aronson, 1995). Stereotype threat can affect cognitive performance and motor skills (Chasten, Bhattacharyya, Horhota, Tam, & Hasher, 2005; Zacher & Hippel, 2022). In this regard, Hermann and Vollmeyer (2016) in investigating the effect of gender stereotype threat in soccer players showed that these stereotypes can directly affect the learning of their movement skills.
Target
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of gender stereotype threat from two psychological and motor dimensions in learning pétanque throwing skills.
Methodology
36 female students with an average age of 13 years participated in this research in two stereotype threat and control groups. The instruction of the stereotypical threat group was that the participants were informed that boys perform better than girls in this skill. The acquisition phase included 10 six-trial blocks and retention and transfer tests were performed in a six-trial block. In addition, all participants filled the Self -efficacy questionnaire before the pre -test, the end of the acquisition phase and before the retention test. Due to the non-normal distribution of data, Mann–Whitney U test was used for data analysis using spss26 software
Results
The results showed that the stereotype threat group has a weaker performance and lower self-efficacy in the skill of throwing pétanque than the control group in acquisition, retention and transfer tests (p≤0.05).
Discussion
The results of the current research showed that stereotype threat through emotional, cognitive and motivational mechanisms (Pennington et al., 2016) such as reducing self-efficacy and possibly increasing anxiety has led to a decrease in performance and learning of pétanque throwing skills.
