Abstract
Introduction and purpose: BMT is a program based on movement and cognition, which aims to provide a new approach to teaching physical education in schools. In this approach, key issues such as developing physical literacy, strengthening thinking skills and creating personal characteristics are considered necessary for learning. In this regard, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of physical education based on the BMT approach on the cognition and level of physical activity of students.
Methodology: The statistical population included male students of Karaj city with an age range of 8 to 10 years, which numbered 60 people (30 experimental people, 30 control people) using available sampling method and performing a cognitive assessment test and completing the international physical activity questionnaire as pre-test-post-test participated in this research. The experimental group participated in the program based on the BMT approach for 16 sessions, 2 sessions per week, during this time, the control group did their usual activities. To analyze the data, multivariate analysis of variance was used using SPSS version 24 software.
Findings: The results showed that the effect of BMT program on cognition (P = 0.001) and its scales including planning (P= 0.001), attention (P= 0.001), simultaneous and sequential processing (P= 0.001) and physical activity level (P= 0.001) are significant. And the participants in the experimental group performed better than the control group (P = 0.001).
Conclusion: According to the findings, it seems that the use of new educational approaches by motivating students and dynamism in physical education classes leads to improvement of cognition and physical activity level.
