Abstract
Background and Purpose: The rapid increase in population and the profound impact on economic and social conditions have led to various attitudes, including social, physical, and psychological attitudes. Therefore, one of the enduring concepts explored in conjunction with personality in the field of psychological attitudes toward people is a person's physical characteristics and appearance. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the differences in the dimensions of body attitude in older women and men.
Method: The present study utilized correlational research, and the required information was collected cross-sectionally. The statistical sample for the current study included 200 elderly individuals over 60 years of age in the northwest area of Tehran. The personal information questionnaire and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) were used to collect the required information. The MBSRQ comprises 69-questions and 9-subscales. The physical dimension includes 54-questions, the dimension of satisfaction with different body parts includes 9-questions, and the dimension of attitude towards weight includes 6-questions. Pearson's correlation coefficient and independent t-test were employed to analyze the data. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 20 software.
Results: The Pearson correlation coefficient test results indicate a significant relationship between the total score and the components of the MBSRQ questionnaire. An independent t-test was conducted to evaluate the significant difference between elderly males and females. The test results revealed a significant difference in the overall score of the MBSRQ questionnaire and its components between elderly men and women. Elderly women scored higher than men in all components as well as in the overall score.
Conclusion: The results indicate that elderly women have a more positive and higher attitude toward their bodies. Therefore, it is recommended to consider this psychological component in evaluations related to the elderly. Given the importance of the elderly's perception of their bodies and the need to improve the mental well-being of this demographic, it is recommended to concentrate on enhancing this psychological aspect.
