Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that is associated with glycemic disorders,
psychological disorders, and sleep disorders. But studies have shown the special role of exercise
in the health of these patients, however, the relationship between physical activity and the sleep
disorders in these patients is still not well known. Therefore, the aim of this study was to
investigate the relationship between the physical activity and the quality of sleep in middle-aged
patients with type 1 diabetes in Morvdasht city.
Methods: In this semi-experimental and causal-comparative study, 450 people (230 men and
220 women) with diabetes were selected as a statistical sample. The International Physical
Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Petersburg Questionnaire were used to evaluate the
amount of physical activity and sleep quality in the subjects of this research. To analyze the
findings of the research, Kalmogorov-Smirnov tests, Pearson correlation test and independent t
test were used in SPSS version 22 software. A significance level of 0.05 was considered for all
analyses.
Results: A significant and positive relationship was observed between the amount of physical
activity and the quality of sleep (P=0.04, r=0.98); Also, there was no significant difference in the
levels of physical activity (P=0.08) and sleep quality (P=0.065) in men and women.
Conclusion: In general, it seems that by increasing the amount of physical activity, it is possible
to predict the improvement of sleep quality in patients with diabetes. Therefore, it is suggested
that diabetic patients use physical activities to increase sleep quality and improve psychological
function.
