Abstract
According to the WHO, more than 80% of adolescents’ aged 11 to 17 in schools do not follow the recommendations of at least one hour of physical activity per day, and their current and future health is at risk. This reveals the need for urgent action to increase the level of physical activity of adolescents. Scientific literature has shown that moderate to intense physical activity, compared to low-intensity physical activity, has favorable effects on adolescent health (García-Hermoso et al., 2021). However, a decline in physical activity levels has been observed with increasing adolescent age (Dumitt et al., 2011). According to Ensrud-Skraastad and Haga (2020), the important goal of research on the health and quality of life of adolescents is to identify the psychological and social aspects related to participation in physical activity. This study aims to contribute to this goal by investigating the relationship between personality variables such as self-concept and basic psychological needs in physical education class with physical activity.
The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between physical and academic self-concept, and motivation with physical activity of adolescent female students.
A total of 297 adolescent student (13.52 ±1.10) voluntarily participated in this research and completed the tools for measuring the research variables (including: Short form of Physical Self Description Questionnaire; Academic Self-concept Questionnaire; Self-determination Questionnaire in physical education; International Physical Activity Questionnaire).
The results of regression analysis showed that physical and academic self-concept are suitable predictors for satisfaction of basic needs in physical education class and also the level of physical activity of students. Also, the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs predicts the physical activity.
The findings of the research show that students with higher physical and academic self-concept experience a greater sense of satisfaction and a higher level of physical activity.
