Abstract
Background
Abdominal fat is indirectly correlated with many of the adverse health effects of obesity. Whole-body Electrical Muscle Stimulation (WB-EMS) is a popular training technology which offers an easy way to start an effective and safe workout. Although researches have shown significant changes on body composition values as a result of EMS trainings. Also bodyweight training (BWT) known as a beneficial exercise based on classic principles of physical education. Therefore the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of BWT trainings with WB-EMS on visceral fat and abdominal circumference in middle-aged men.
Objective
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of body weight training with Electrical Muscle Stimulation on visceral fat and abdominal circumference in middle-aged men.
methods
The statistical population of this study consisted of a group of middle-aged men [(N=12), mean [±SD] age, height, VF (Visceral fat) and AC (Abdominal circumference), 48±5.9 years, 174.6 ± 5.7 cm, 111.7±35.1 cm2 and 97.6±9.3 cm respectively]. The implemented protocol included 10 weeks of training, a total of 20 sessions, each lasted 20 minutes. Experienced trainers supervised all training sessions. During WB-EMS exercises, subjects wore a special vest with integrated electrodes that was used to apply electrical stimulation to specific muscles by bipolar impulses at a frequency of 85 Hz and a pulse width of 350 microseconds. body composition analysis test, taken before and after the intervention. Research data were analyzed with SPSS 26 software.
Result
Comparing the results of the research study showed that 10 weeks of bodyweight training with electrical stimulation had significantly reduced the visceral fat and abdominal circumference of the subjects (P≤0.05). In other words, WB-EMS exercises showed a 13% decrease in visceral fat and a 3% decrease in abdominal circumference in the subjects.
Conclusion:
The WB-EMS have positive effects on reduction of visceral fat and abdominal circumference . This method can be used for the people who face some physical and mental limitations such as soft joints, weak muscles, lack of time, etc.
