Abstract
Self-determination theory is a theoretical framework that provides a clear view of how motivational processes influence individual behavior (Ryan & Deci, 2017). This theory also supports the conceptualization of academic engagement by suggesting that emotions motivate behaviors in the classroom. According to SDT, the motivation that individuals develop to drive them toward a particular activity depends on the quality of their participation in fulfilling three basic psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness (Zamarripa et al.,2021). These basic psychological needs are an energetic state whereby a person experiences greater confidence and a healthy motivational orientation; which in turn improves health and facilitates effort, persistence, and academic engagement (Deci and Ryan, 2000). Based on research results and findings, few studies have investigated the relationship between basic psychological needs and motivation with academic engagement in physical education class.
Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between basic psychological needs, types of motivation (autonomous, controlled, and amotivation) and academic engagement during physical education class in adolescent female students.
The relationship between the variables and the predictability of the criterion variable were investigated using correlation test and multivariate regression analysis. The participants of the research included 376 (13.70 ± 1.03) female students of the first secondary school in Gonbad Kavus city. The research data collection tools included the self-determination questionnaire in physical education by Standage et al. (2005), and Reeve's academic engagement questionnaire.
The research findings showed that the correlation coefficient between the research variables is statistically significant; Also, basic psychological needs are significant predictors of academic engagement (P<0.0005), and type of motivation (P<0.0005). Also, motivation was a suitable predictor for academic engagement (P<0.0005).
These findings showed that basic psychological needs and the quality of motivation have an effect on students' academic engagement in physical education and the research results confirm the predictions based on self-determination theory. Therefore, it is important to pay special attention to the basic psychological needs of students and also consider the type of motivation in the physical education class to improve the academic engagement of students in the physical education.
