Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this research is to investigate the factors affecting the performance of countries in the Olympics based on two-level analysis.
Methodology: The current research is a review and analytical study. Using the library study method, authentic documents and researches were examined.
Findings: Factors affecting countries' performance in the Olympics can be classified into two levels: structural-environmental factors (wealth, population size, geographical conditions and ideology) and cultural-institutional factors (women's sports, institution building, talent development, naturalization and hosting of events). Rich countries tend to be more successful by investing in elite sports, but poor countries can also be successful. Geographical conditions also affect winter sports. The existence of a young population facilitates the process of population growth. Ideology played a central role in the past, but with global changes and the rise of professional sports, its importance has diminished. Institutional policies and the talent search system play a role in the success of countries; But it seems that increasing cooperation and reducing gender inequality in sports is the reason for increasing attention to women's sports through investment and facilities, which is a key factor in the success of countries. Gender equality and educational justice are known as the most important factors predicting the success of the Olympics for women and men. Sports institution building also plays a big role in success. Talent management and interaction with athletes immigrating to countries can also increase Olympic chances. Also, hosting the Olympics can strengthen the infrastructure and economy of countries, but success requires other factors as well.
Conclusion: Success in the Olympics is a showcase of countries' sporting potential, which affects their social and global status, identity and national unity. An outstanding performance in the Olympics can attract investment for the development of the sport. According to the mentioned factors, it can be concluded that to succeed in this great event, different countries should pay special attention to investing in sports, especially in the fields of talent development, financial and spiritual support, building infrastructure, strengthening national spirit and patriotism.
