Abstract
Background
With increasing age in societies, one of the important changes that occur in health, is the increase in the proportion of obese people. To determine body fatness or obesity, body mass index(BMI) is generally used. WB-EMS-induced muscle contractions provide a very effective form of resistance training, even without the use of heavy weights.
purpose
The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of 10-weeks body weight training (BWT) with WB-EMS on the body mass index of inactive overweight and obese men and women.
Methods
39 inactive subjects (less than 60 minutes of activity per week) who were overweight (25≤BMI<30) or obese (30≤BMI<35) participated. They divided into four groups: 1)overweight women (n=11, height 160.1±5.3 cm, age 44.3±6.3 years, BMI 27.6±1.2 kg/m2, BW 71.9±7.2 kg), 2)obese women (n=10, height 164.2±7.5 cm, age 46.5±8.07 years, BMI 31.3±1.03 kg/m2, BW 84.7±7.3 kg), 3)overweight men (n=11, height 173.6±5.6 cm, age 43.2±7.1 years, BMI 27.4±1 kg/m2, BW 82.7±8.5 kg), and 4)obese men (n=7, height 177.7±7.1 cm, age 45.4±9.3 years, BMI 32.1±1.8 kg/m2, BW 101.2±7.8 kg). All four groups performed 20 minutes of BWT with WB-EMS (85 Hz) for 10 weeks and two sessions per week. Height and weight were measured by laboratory instruments. The BMI was calculated using the formula: weight/height2. Body weight exercises could be done by inactive people. Data analysis was done by SPSS 26.
Results
WB-EMS training reduces BMI. But gender, obesity and overweight had no effect on the reduction rate of BMI and BW. Data analysis of this research by one-way analysis of variance, showed that there was a significant difference between all groups in pre-test and post-test BW and BMI (P<0.001). But there was no significant difference between gender and BMI value for pre-test and post-test BW(P=0.0883) and BMI (P=0.0747).
Conclusion
BWT with WB-EMS will reduce BW and BMI in both women and men, obese and overweight. therefore, this group of non-athletic, overweight, and obese middle-aged individuals at risk for various diseases, body weight training with WB-EMS can improve body general health and reduce the risk of disease caused by high BMI.
