Abstract
Body image is one of the important psychological constructs and an important concept for health professionals. Body image refers to a person's personal perception of his body and has two dimensions: perceptual (how to see a person's size, shape, weight, face, movement and actions) and attitudinal (how do you feel about these characteristics and how do these feelings guide behavior). Many teenagers are constantly preoccupied with their physical appearance and despite their normal or almost normal physical appearance; they show excessive and worrying in this regard. Each person's inappropriate evaluations of his body can gradually affect his desires, emotional relationships, and the occurrence of sexual dissatisfaction by creating a feeling of a large distance between the current appearance and the ideal appearance.
Nowadays, due to social cultural standards about ideal body, negative body image has become more prevalent and especially teenagers consider themselves lacking beauty standards in terms of physical structure. Body image dissatisfaction produces negative psychological effects. The aim of this research was to investigate the state of the body image of adolescent boys and girls and the awareness and attitude of their mothers towards this concerning.
For this purpose, 114 male and female adolescent students between the ages of 13 and 17 from Mashhad schools and their mothers (91 people) were examined. Data were collected through “Multidimensional body-self relationships” and a researcher-made questionnaire on the level of awareness and attitude of adolescent mothers regarding the body image condition of their teenagers. Data analysis was done by dependent t-test, correlation and regression in SPPS software.
The results showed that teenage girls (body image score=158±18) had significantly more negative body image than teenage boys (body image score=176±21) (P=0.013). Also, the results showed that mothers of teenage girls had more knowledge about the body image satisfaction status of their childern than mothers of teenage boys (P=0.001) and their attitude towards the causes of the body image of their daughters was closer to reality. Considering the need for mothers attention to solving children's postural disorders,, more education in the field of postural gender differences is necessary for mothers of adolescent boys.
