Abstract
Background and Aims: Many individuals who suffer a lateral ankle sprain will develop chronic ankle instability (CAI). Hip strength deficits and self-reported patient-reported outcome scores are commonly documented among individuals with CAI. Because of the interconnected chain of the body and the connection between organs, the hip joint should be considered in rehabilitation, but the effects of gluteal muscle strength training protocols on self-reported outcomes in this population have not been well investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks’ gluteal muscles strengthening exercises on self-reported instability feeling in patients with CAI.
Method: In this study, 28 available female students of Shahrekord University with chronic ankle instability and gluteal muscle weakness selected and randomly divided into control and experimental groups (N = 14 per group). The training group performed eight weeks of gluteal muscle strengthening exercises, while the control group continued their daily life. Participants were assessed on self-reported instability feeling (Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool) before and after the 8-week training period. The independent and dependent t-test were used to compare groups and time points. Significant level was considered as p≤0.05 in all statistical analyzes.
Findings: The results of the independent t-test showed that there isn't statistically significant difference between the groups, before and after the exercises (P<0.05).
Discussion: According to the results of this study, it can be concluded that the exercise program to strengthen the gluteal muscle without other exercises, especially without ankle muscle strengthening exercises, can't reduce chronic ankle instability, and other exercises are needed in this program, such as proprioception, balance and strengthening ankle muscles.
