Abstract
Abstract
Background: diabetes is usually associated with undiagnosed dyslipidemia. In diabetic patients, lipid profile, management is crucial. Regular physical exercise has been reported to be effective for diabetes management. Licorice, as an antioxidant supplement, has received a great deal of attention in improving the lipid profile. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of swimming training and licorice consumption on lipid profile of intestinal tissue in diabetic rats.
Methods: 30 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 6 groups: healthy controls, diabetic sham, diabetic + supplement, diabetic+exercise, diabetic+exercise+supplement. To induce diabetes, a single dose of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg) was used as an intraperitoneal injection. Licorice extract (500 mg) was injected intraperitoneally to rats. Endurance swimming training was done for 8 weeks and 5 sessions per week, which started with 10 minutes of training in the first week and gradually increased to 30 minutes at the fourth week and continued until the eighth week. 48 hours after the last training session, blood samples were collected from their hearts. The data were analyzed using ANOVA statistical test and Bonferroni post hoc test.
Results: Induction of diabetes caused an increase in cholesterol, TG and LDL levels (P=0.01). Swimming training and licorice+swimming training decreased them (P=0.01). In addition, diabetes decreased HDL while licorice+swimming training increased it. Licorice supplementation have any significant effect.
Conclusion: It seems that performing the endurance swimming training with licorice supplementation is more effective in ameliorating some lipid profile than any of these interventions alone in diabetes and licorice have a synergetic effect with swimming training in ameliorating lipid profile in diabetic male rats in this regard.
