Abstract
Objective: The aim of this research was to investigate the physical activity and mood states of individuals during quarantine and to propose strategies for improving mental health in those conditions.
Method: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive-correlational study. A total of 400 men and women (200 from each gender) aged 19 to 52 from Tehran participated in the study. They were selected through convenience sampling and invited to participate through social networks. The Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to measure the intensity, duration, and frequency of physical activity before and during quarantine, and the Brunel Mood Scale questionnaire was used to assess the participants' mood during quarantine. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the Kai Square, Anova, and Pearson correlation coefficient tests, and the data were analyzed with SPSS version 22.
Findings: The results indicated that the habits and intensity of exercise before and after the spread of COVID-19 were different. The closure of sports centers with social limitations and lack of access to suitable equipment also led to a reduction in appropriate physical activity. Individuals who engaged in physical activity before COVID-19 reported greater discomfort during quarantine, and men showed more significant changes in the intensity of exercise. The findings suggested a positive impact of exercise on the mood and temperament of individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. The group that increased the duration of their exercise had better mood scores compared to other groups. Moreover, individuals who increased the duration of their exercise had more positive mood scores. On the other hand, less change in exercise duration was associated with fewer positive mood scores. Additionally, individuals who maintained social distancing and reduced their exercise duration had lower mood scores compared to others
.Conclusion: Exercise during quarantine can improve mood states. In fact, exercise plays a fundamental role in improving the mental and physical health of individuals even in limited circumstances. Therefore, encouraging continued physical activity in similar conditions will likely contribute to personal and societal well-being.
