Effect of aerobic training with cinnamon extract on omentin-1 and chemerin in insulin-resistant rats

Abstract
Background: Adipose tissue, as an active endocrine gland, can secrete various cytokines. Changes in the production of adipokines following exercise play an important role in controlling insulin resistance. The polyphenols in cinnamon also prevent the formation of the final glycosylated product in the serum.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of an aerobic training and cinnamon supplementation on omentin-1 and chemerin in insulin-resistant mice.
Method: In this experimental study thirty-six Wistar male rats were randomly divided into four groups: control (n=9), aerobic training (n=9), cinnamon (n=9), and aerobic training+cinnamon (n=9). Insulin-resistance status induced by %10 fructose solutions during 5 weeks. Training groups subjected to a 5-day per week aerobic training program (with 75-80% VO2max) for 8 weeks. Supplementayion groups subjected to injected 200 ml/kg/day cinnamon extract. The data were analyzed using ANOVA. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: There was a significant increase in omentin-1 in the training group (p=0.0001) and training+cinnamon (p=0.0001). It was also observed a significant increase in the training+cinnamon group compared to the cinnamon group (p=0.001). Chemerin had a significant decrease in the training, cinnamon and training+cinnamon groups compared to the control (p=0.0001). It was also observed a significant decrease in the amount of chemerin in the training+cinnamon compared to the training group (p=0.009) and the cinnamon (p=0.0001).
Discussion: It seems that aerobic training and cinnamon supplementation have an important role in improving adipose tissue disorders caused by diabetes by affecting omentin-1 and chemerin. However, the effect of the combination of training and cinnamon was greater.
