Abstract
Background: Diabetes is one of the most common diseases and its rate is increasing rapidly. Lack of physical activity is one of the most important risk factors for the development of type 2 diabetes. Aerobic exercise leads to a decrease in insulin resistance. Pomegranate also improves insulin sensitivity and reduces glucose.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of six weeks of moderate intensity aerobic exercise with pomegranate granatum L on HbA1c and insulin resistance in women with type 2 diabetes.
Materials and Methods: In this study, 33 diabetic women with type 2 diabetes were selected from Babol city and were randomly divided into four groups (control, P. granatum L, training and P. granatumL+ training). The training groups participated in an aerobic training for six weeks, three sessions a week (60% to 75% of the reserved heart rate and for 25 to 45 min). The control groups of P. granatum L and P. granatum L + training were fed 150 mL of P. granatum L for six weeks (at about 18 p.m). Two days before and after the protocol, blood samples were taken.
Results: There was a significant decrease in HbA1c (p=0.007), insulin (p=0.017), glucose (p=0.013) and HOMA-IR (p=0.043) in the P. granatumL+ training compared to the Control. Also, the reduction of glucose in the P. granatumL+ training was significant compared to the exercise group (p=0.047).
Discussion: It seems that aerobic exercise and P. granatumL have an important role in controlling diabetes and preventing the progression of diabetes by influencing blood glucose homeostasis indicators. However, the simultaneous effect of training and supplementation on these indicators was better.
