Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the different focus distance for experienced and novice badminton players. The statistical sample of the current study was novice badminton players at the university level and badminton players at the national league level. 20 experienced badminton players and 20 novice badminton players were randomly assigned to four attention focus conditions: control (no instruction), internal (i.e. focusing on arm movement), proximal external (i.e. focusing on the badminton racket), and external distal (i.e. focus on the goal). Performance outcomes (perceived confidence level and short and long service and drop scores) were recorded. Descriptive statistics were used to report mean and standard deviation, and two-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni's post hoc test were used to compare means. SPSS version 24 software was used for data analysis. A significance level of 0.05 was considered. Experienced badminton players had better performance results than novice badminton players. External proximal focus was particularly beneficial for novice badminton players, while experienced badminton players had an advantage in both external focus instructions. Proximal external focus may provide a perceptual-action process for novice badminton players to compare the relationship between action planning and the surrounding environment. In addition, the transition to expertise might result in no difference between both external focus instructions for experienced badminton players. In general, it can be said that it is better to use attention focus instructions appropriate to the skill level in order to improve optimal performance. Coaches and practitioners can use internal and far or near external focus to improve performance according to the skill level of the players.
