Comparison the effect of motor task complexity on choice and simple reaction time

Abstract
Introduction: Based on the research literature in the simple reaction time task, whith more complicated response, the longer it takes to start the response. The overal purpose of the present study was to compare the effects of the task complexity on the simple and choice reaction time.
Method: In this regard, 24 students from Semnan University were selected according to the current research conditions. Response time assignment was measured using an eight- direction reaction time device. All subjects were asked to perform choice and simple RT which responses had three levels of difficulty (simple, moderate, and complex) in pre-designed blocks with counterbalance way. During the implementation of the simple RT task, 12 subjects performed the task without instructions, and 12 subjects completed the task with the response preparation instructions. The subjects performed RT task in 5 blocks that the first block was used as the training and the results of the other four blocks were used in the analysis.
Results: The results of repeated-measure ANOVA were significant in both selective response time (F = 16.818, P = 0.001) and simple reaction time (F = 67.8898, P = 0.001). Analysis of the results in relation to the effect of the response preparation instruction showed that this variable had no significant effect on simple RT tasks (F = 2.790 = P = 0.109).
Discussion and conclusion: Implementation of both simple and choice reaction times is significantly faster at lower levels of complexity. As the most important achievement of the present research, by providing a preparation instruction in the implementation of the simple reaction Time, response speed in complex response can not be reduced as fast as responses to simple response. In fact, the increase in reaction time is inevitable as a result of the response complexity. Part of these results can be attributed to the time taken to use more motor units in the muscles, more muscle involvement in more complex assignments or some of the motor's motive.
