Abstract
Background: Although factors related to obesity such as mental health and eating attitudes have been mentioned in past studies; However, it is not yet clear to what extent these factors are related to the success of weight loss after exercise and nutritional interventions.
Purpose:The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between mental health and eating attitudes with the amount of weight loss in obese and overweight people referring to a nutrition clinic.
methods:The research method was Descriptive-analytical correlation type, the statistical population was obese and overweight people who referred to Nutrition Clinic, of which 420 people (378 women with weight 79.99 ± 15.91, height 161.67 ± 5.98, age 39.59±11.15 and BMI 30.88±3.06 and 42 men with weight 100.31±23.59, height 175.07±9.75, age 38.45±11.35 and BMI 32.75±4.20) selected by available sampling method. Data were collected using online questionnaires including Carner's eating attitude and Goldberg's mental health. Data analysis was done by Pearson's correlation coefficient test and stepwise regression in SPSS-23 software.
Results: There was a significant relationship between mental health (P=0.000, r=- 0.18) and eating attitude (P=0.030, r= 0.10) with the success rate in weight loss. The relationship between mental health dimensions including physical condition (P=0.000, r=- 0.19), anxiety (P=0.018, r=- 0.11) and social function (P=0.001, r=-0.16) was significant with weight loss. The relationship between the components of eating attitude including oral control (r=0.21, P=0.000) and desire to eat (r=- 0.12, P=0.009) with success in weight loss was significant.
Conclusion:Our results showed that higher general health as well as higher level of eating attitude was associated with more weight loss in obese and overweight people referred to the nutrition clinic. Therefore, paying attention to the above factors will increase the probability of success in weight loss.
