Abstract
The effect of eight weeks of aerobic exercise and ‎Pilates on depression and life expectancy of ‎female prisoners in Qom province

Background: Depression is a psychiatric disorder characterized by persistent sadness and a lack of interest or pleasure in previously rewarding and pleasurable activities, leading to decreased life expectancy. Depression and reduced life expectancy are leading mental disorders among prisoners worldwide. However, little attention is paid to this situation, especially in developing countries. Considering the importance of sports programs in health and its relationship with psychological factors, it is suggested that there is a need to develop exercise programs to improve psychological factors in prisoners.

Purpose: the present study was conducted with the aim of the effect of eight weeks of aerobic exercise and pilates on depression and life expectancy of female prisoners in Qom province.

Methodology: In this semi-experimental study, which was conducted with a pre-test-post-test design, 45 female prisoners from Qom city were randomly selected and placed in 3 groups of 15 people for aerobic exercise, pilates and control. In the pre-test phase, the participants completed the Goldberg's depressive disorder questionnaires and Schneider's life expectancy. The training phase was conducted for eight weeks and 3 sessions of 60 minutes each week. During this time, the control group did their daily activities. After finishing the last training session, the participants started to complete the desired questionnaires again. The obtained data were analyzed by multivariate covariate analysis test.

Results: The results showed that aerobic exercises and pilates exercises have a significant effect on reducing depression and increasing the life expectancy of female prisoners in Qom city (P<0.05), but no significant difference was found between the two exercise methods.

Conclusion: The results of this study emphasize the effectiveness of aerobic exercises and pilates on depression and life expectancy of prisoned women.
