Abstract
Background and purpose: The development of new technologies, the development of media literacy and the lack of sufficient movement of people have led to lack of movement literacy. On the other hand, sports and physical activity play a very important role in the development of health, social and economic goals. The purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between physical literacy and the motivation to participate in physical activity in female students.
Materials and methods: To carry out this descriptive-correlational research, 118 female students aged 16 to 18 years were randomly selected. Physical literacy was measured with a 25-question Adolescent Physical Literacy Questionnaire (APLQ) and motivation to participate in physical activity was measured with a 30-question motivation to participate in sports activities questionnaire by Gill et al. To determine the relationship between variables, Pearson's correlation coefficient was used in spss-26 software.
Findings: The mean and standard deviation of the individual characteristics of the participants included age 16.52 ± 0.814 years, height 163.98 ± 0.549 cm, weight 57.92 ± 0.92 kg. The physical literacy score was 83.01 ± 17.77 and the motivation score for participating in physical activity was 115.81 ± 16.301. The results of Pearson's correlation coefficient showed that there is a direct (r=0.347) and significant (p=0.001) relationship between physical literacy and the motivation to participate in physical activity.
Conclusion: Overall, the findings of this research show that as the physical literacy of secondary school girls increases, their motivation to participate in physical activity increases, this strengthens the possibility of increasing physical activity of these students in adulthood.
Keywords: physical literacy, participation motivation, physical activity, adolescent girls, students
