Abstract
Background and purpose: Physically literate people continuously develop the motivation and ability to understand, communicate and analyze different forms of movement, they are able to perform various movements confidently, skillfully, creatively and strategically. On the other hand, Mental toughness is a psychological factor that facilitates proper concentration and motivation in adverse conditions, and it must be maintained and promoted in order to achieve success. This research was conducted with the aim of investigating the relationship between physical literacy and mental toughness in adolescent girls.
Materials and methods: To carry out this descriptive-correlational research, 118 female students aged 16 to 18 were selected voluntarily. Physical literacy was assessed with the 25-question Adolescent Physical Literacy Questionnaire (APLQ) and mental toughness with the Mental Toughness Scale of Adolescents (MTSOA). To analyze the relationship between variables, Pearson's correlation coefficient was used in SPSS-26 software.
Findings: The average and standard deviation of the individual characteristics of the participants included age 16.52 ± 0.814 years, height 163.98 ± 0.549 cm, and weight 57.92 ± 0.92 kg. Physical literacy score was 83.01 ± 17.77 and mental toughness score was 52.17 ± 7.95. The results of Pearson's correlation coefficient showed that there is a direct (r=0.242) and significant (P=0.008) relationship between physical literacy and mental toughness of adolescent girls.
Conclusion: Overall, the findings of this research show that the higher the physical literacy of adolescent girls, the higher mental toughness they have and the later they give up in the face of problems and hardships.
