Abstract
Abstract
Background and purpose: Adolescence is a critical stage in trying to shape sustainable health behaviors, and physical activity behaviors in adolescence seem to determine future physical activity behaviors in adulthood. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between physical literacy and body mass index (BMI) in adolescent girls.
Materials and methods: In this descriptive- correlation research, 126 female students between the ages of 13 and 17 in Sanandaj city were selected voluntarily. Physical literacy was evaluated using the 25-question physical literacy questionnaire (APLQ) and the body mass index was calculated by dividing weight by the square of height (meters). To analyze the relationship between variables, Pearson's correlation coefficient was used in SPSS19 software.
Findings: The mean and standard deviation of individual characteristics of the participants include age 15.09±1.22 years, height 161.9±0.06 cm, weight 56.95±9.30 kg, body mass index 21.70±3.21. and physical literacy score was 84.92±16.17. The results of Pearson's correlation coefficient showed that there is an inverse (r=-0.218) and significant (P=0.014) relationship between physical literacy and body mass index of adolescent girls.
Conclusion: Overall, the findings of this research showed that it is possible to help reduce obesity, increase the level of physical activity and improve the long-term health of adolescent girls by developing physical literacy.
