Abstract
Background: Dysmenorrhea or painful menstruation is one of the most common problems in women. Approximately 50% of women suffer from dysmenorrhea since their puberty to mid-life and experience terrible physical and mental pains, which are usually accompanied by vomiting, nausea, and dizziness. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of Kegel exercises on dysmenorrhea related pain. Methods: Eighteen women between the ages of 15 and 49 in Amol city participated in this randomized controlled cross-over study. Each individual was examined in two menstrual cycles either as their own control or the experimental treatment. The pain intensity was examined by VAS. The Kegel exercise program was completed in three 30-minute sessions per week for eight weeks. A mixed ANOVA (2*2) was used to compare both the between- within- groups differences. All statistical analyses were performed at a significance level of 0.05 using SPSS version 20. Results: The results showed a significant difference on the variable of pain intensity (VAS) between the pre-test and the post-test in the experimental group (p <0.05). The between group analysis of variance showed that there was no differences between the groups in the pre-test, but a significant difference was evident in the pain intensity at the post-test values. Conclusion: According to the results, it can be concluded that eight-week Kegel exercises may lead to the improvement of pain in women with primary dysmenorrhea. Therefore, exercise specialists and occupational therapists are recommended to use this protocol to improve the pain of women with primary dysmenorrhea.
