Abstract
Sport, through the creation of individual and social relationships, helps participants learn attitudes, values, skills, and general tendencies such as sportsmanship, discipline, and ultimately its most important goal, which is health in both physical and mental dimensions. This study aims to compare the mental health of athletes in individual and team sports (case study: Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province). The statistical population consisted of 1800 athletes from individual and team sports with more than 4 years of sports experience approved by the Taekwondo, Karate, Volleyball, and Basketball Associations of Shahr-e Kord. Using the Cochran formula, 639 statistical samples were estimated and selected by convenience sampling. The research method was descriptive and was conducted in the field. The General Health Questionnaire by Goldberg (1972), which consists of 28 questions, was used to collect data. The reliability of the questionnaire was reported to be 0.83 using the Cronbach's alpha coefficient test. Descriptive indicators and independent t-test statistical tests were used in SPSS software for data analysis. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the mental health of athletes based on the type of sport (P = 0.001, t = -2.75). According to the results, the team sports group reported higher average scores, and it is clear that based on the statements made, athletes in team sports (volleyball and basketball) are in a better situation in terms of the mental health variable. There was also a significant difference in the mental health of athletes in individual sports based on gender and athletes in team sports based on gender. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the mental health of athletes in individual sports based on marital status, but a significant difference was observed in the mental health of athletes in team sports based on marital status. Finally, the results showed that there was a significant difference in the mental health of athletes in individual and social sports based on gender.
