Abstract
The Effect of Coaching Changes on Athletes' Mental State

Introduction: Change in sports clubs and at the top of it the technical staff and coaches of the club happens a lot and is in some way undeniable, and it brings with it many consequences. These consequences may be positive and negative, as well as directly and indirectly related to team performance and results, as well as the psychological state of the team and its members. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of coaching changes and instability on athletes' mental state.
Method: According to its main purpose, the present study was descriptive and correlational, in terms of data collection, and the nature of data was quantitative. the population of the study consisted of volleyball teams of a women 's league. The total number of the statistical population consisted of 38 teams, the collection was 456. According to the use of Cochran formula for obtaining the sample size, a sample of 210 people were studied. The instruments used in this study was general health questionnaire (GHQ) to assess athletes mental state. Data analysis of the research was done using independent t-tests and Spearman's correlation.
Results: Descriptive results showed that the mental state dimensions of athletes included social action (2.87±1.92), physical symptoms (2.18±2.20), symptoms of depression (2.10±1.93), and symptoms of anxiety & sleep disorder (1.33±2.26), respectively. The results showed that the stability of coaching significantly improved the athletes mental state. Also, the results of Spearman's correlation coefficient test showed that there was a negative and significant relationship between the coaching changes and athletes mental state (r=0.30).
Conclusion: Therefore, the findings of the research supported the hypothesis that the stability of coaching has significant positive effects on the psychological state of athletes, which are significantly reduced under the influence of multiple changes of coaches. Therefore, appropriate and effective strategies in the process of selecting coaches, and selecting coaches based on appropriate indicators are of particular importance in club management.
