Abstract
Introduction
Fantasy sports is a type of virtual computer game that has grown from half a million people in the late 1980s to about 60 million people in 2020 in North America. Fantasy sports are popular online gaming platforms where participants assume the role of team owners. Contestants form teams by selecting athletes from a pool of real professional players and then develop strategies to optimize their team's performance by managing rosters, making trades, and adapting to injuries and other unforeseen circumstances. Points are awarded to virtual teams based on the performance of their chosen athletes in real-world games with the goal of collecting the most points in a given time frame. The purpose of this research is to review the consequences of participation in fantasy sports.
Methodology
This research is a type of review and analytical studies, and using the library study method, authentic documents and researches from sources and scientific databases were examined and analyzed.
Results
The results of the review of research conducted in this field show that the consequences of participation in fantasy sports can be divided into two general categories, positive and negative. Its positive points include social connections, personal benefits and participation opportunities, and its negative points include well-being, intensity of conflict, and online influence.
Conclusion
The most important positive consequences of participating in fantasy sports are the development of transferable skills. In addition, the context of social connections creates social interaction and camaraderie, enabling players to maintain existing friendships, make new ones, and maintain that feeling in the long term. The most important negative consequences of participating in fantasy sports are anxiety, addiction, disappointment and regret, decreased self-confidence, negative effects on mood, etc. The fact that fantasy sports is an online game with various online resources to increase participation (such as YouTube videos and dedicated websites) suggests that participants can easily be drawn into a potentially negative environment.
