Abstract
Background and aim: Resilience is essential for mental health and well-being in old age. With increasing age, mental health disorder increase, but daily activities are usually insufficient. Therefore, investigating the factors affecting mental health disorder, especially the impact of physical activity and resilience, can enrich the relevant research fields.
Purpose: The present study was conducted with the aim of the relationship between physical activity and mental health disorder with the mediation of resilience in the elderly.
Methods: In this descriptive correlation study with structural equation model design, 344 elderly people (134 women, 210 men) of Isfahan city were selected by available sampling by referring to parks and public places. In this research, participants attempted to complete the short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, Goldberg Mental Health Questionnaire, and Connors and Davidson's Resilience Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using structural equation model and AMOS-24 software.
Results: The results showed that physical activity has a positive direct effect on resilience (β=0.32, P<0.01) and a negative direct effect on mental health disorder (β=−0.36, P<0.01) of the elderly. Also, other results showed that resilience has a direct negative effect on mental health disorder (β=−0.27, P<0.01). Other results showed that Resilience had a partial mediating effect between physical activity and mental health disorder of the elderly, with a mediating effect value of 0.18 and a mediating effect contribution rate of 31%.
Conclusion: The results of present study highlight that physical activity is a possible protective factor for mental health disorder. Physical activity and household chores have strong protective effects and future interventions could be targeted from this perspective. Resilience plays a partially mediating role and more attention should be paid to the mental health of older adults.
