Abstract
The success of athletes and sports champions is not solely determined by their physical abilities. In order for athletes to perform acceptably in high-stress situations in sports competitions, they need to employ proper executive functions such as attention management, active memory, and decision-making with minimal errors. Executive functions refer to a set of cognitive processes that facilitate goal-directed behaviors and provide a framework for achieving objectives. Despite the importance of executive functions in athletes' performance, research has unfortunately largely overlooked the role of executive function performance.
Therefore, this study aimed to identify cognitive skills and brain executive functions and their impact on the success of athletes and champions at the University of Tehran. The research method was applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-correlational in terms of data collection using structural equation modeling. The statistical population of the study included researchers, students, and professors in the fields of cognitive sciences, cognitive neuroscience, and physical education, with 100 individuals selected through simple random sampling. The measurement tool was a researcher-made questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale. The validity of the questionnaire was confirmed content-wise, and its reliability was calculated using Cronbach's alpha test at 0.87.
Data analysis was performed using tests such as one-sample t-test, Friedman test, regression coefficient, and structural equation modeling with the use of SPSS and AMOS software. The results of the study indicate that excellent brain executive functions and cognitive skills such as concentration, attention control, decision-making during exercise, and mindfulness have a direct relationship with the success of athletes and champions.
