Abstract
Abstract
Background: Sleeping is an active process that can affect daily functioning and physical and mental health in many ways, and it can be affected by stress hormones. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) often have sleeping problems. One of the parents' prevalent concerns is sleep disorders. Exercise by releasing some hormones such as endorphin and regulating stress hormones namely cortisol, which result in sleep disturbances, may improve sleep quality. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is the investigation of the effect of selected physical activities on sleep quality in children with ASDs.
Method: The subjects of this investigation included 8 children with ASDs. Children divided into 2 groups, experimental group (n=4), and control group (n=4). The experimental group was trained (3 sessions/week for 4 weeks). At the beginning and end of this course the sleeping quality of children was measured by CSHQ questioner.
Results: the results of this investigation showed that although there was not any significant different between pre-test and post-test in subscales, there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test in total sleep disturbance score (P<%5).
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it has been revealed that the physical activity program can promote the sleep quality of children with ASDs and help them to sleep in total. For subscales, it is suggested that the program training is given for a more extended period of time. Because it seems that in order to illustrate if the training program is effective, time plays a crucial role.
