Rehabilitation treatment strategies for athletics with knee osteoarthritis, literature review

Abstract
Introduction:
Previous studies showed high prevalence of knee osteoarthritis(KO) in former athletics because of increased knee loading and risk of injuries during sport activities. There are various conservative method to knee osteoarthritis management in athletics such as therapeutic exercise, physical therapy, patient education, weight management and use of orthoses. The aim of this review article is comparing the effectiveness of these approaches in reduce pain and improve function of the knee osteoarthritis of athletics.
Method:
We conducted a search via PubMed, Scopus and ISI web of knowledge to identify studies on rehabilitation of athletics with knee osteoarthritis. Some key words such as rehabilitation, athletics, physical therapy, orthotic interventions were combined with knee osteoarthritis. The publication dates of the full-length articles were between 2000 and 2023. Down and Black tool was used to evaluate the quality of the articles.
Results:
Our multiple Medline searches led to the find out 36 papers that 17 of which were relevant based on title and abstract. Based on their references, we retrieved 4 more articles. We ultimately included 21 articles in this literature review. Based on the results of various studies use of foot arch support or valgus knee braces can unload the medial knee joint loading and reduce pain. Electrical stimulation, thermal modalities and low -level laser therapy and manual therapy are the other approaches indicated in treatment of knee osteoarthritis.

Conclusion:
The effectiveness of noninvasive approaches of knee osteoarthritis treatment in athletics is mostly depend on age and level of knee injury, however preventive methods such as education, weight control and use of protective knee orthoses can reduce the risk of knee injury and following knee osteoarthritis.
