Abstract
Introduction and objectives: The most common accident that occurs in the elderly society is falling, which is caused by comprehensive changes that occur in the neuro-environmental, physical and movement systems. For this reason, the factor of balance and rehabilitation in this age group has received the attention of researchers. In the meantime, considering the role of maintaining correct posture in daily activities and the importance of breathing exercises in increasing the performance of the elderly, the purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of a posture retraining course along with breathing exercises on the daily performance and balance of healthy male elderly.
Materials and methods: In this semi-experimental study, 30 active elderly men (61±21.11 years old) were selected by convenience sampling and randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. Daily performance and balance were measured using the Daily Life Activity Questionnaire and the Timed Get Up and Go Test (TUG) before and after six weeks of training. The experimental group of the exercise protocol of pasteur retraining along with breathing exercises for six weeks (every week They performed 3 sessions for 45 minutes. During this period, the control group only participated in two phases: pre-test and post-test. Data analysis was done with SPSS statistical software version 22 and one-way analysis of variance tests at a significant level (P<0.05).
Findings: The findings of the research showed that practicing a posture retraining course along with breathing exercises was significant in improving the daily performance and balance of healthy elderly men (P=0.002), but it was not significant in the control group (P<0.05).
Conclusion: According to the results of the present research, it seems that the exercise protocol of postural retraining along with breathing exercises is effective in improving the daily performance and balance of healthy elderly men. Therefore, according to the effect of this type of exercise, it is suggested to be used as a modality to prevent the symptoms of aging and also to increase the performance of the elderly in rehabilitation centers for the elderly.
