Abstract
Background and Purpose: The term psychosocial development refers to personality development characteristics in Erikson's theory, which emphasizes the interaction between an individual and their psychological, social, and physical environment. Erikson's theory of psycho-social development posits that every individual progresses through eight consecutive stages from childhood to old age, each characterized by a unique conflict or crisis. Thus the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychosocial development with quality of life and mental health among athletes.
Method: The present study utilized correlational research, and the required information was collected cross-sectionally. The statistical sample for the current study included 66 students’ athletes in Allameh Tabataba'i University. The personal information questionnaire, the Hawley psychosocial development questionnaire, the quality of life questionnaire-26, and the general health questionnaire (GHQ)-28 were used to collect the required information. Pearson's correlation coefficient and regression test were employed to analyze the data. The data was analyzed using SPSS version-27 software.
Results: The Pearson correlation coefficient test results indicate a significant relationship between psychosocial development and quality of life (r=517, P=0.001) and mental health (r=339, P=0.006). Also, the result of stepwise regression indicated a linear relationship between quality of life and mental health with psychosocial development, suggesting their predictive value among athletes.
Conclusion: The results indicate that athletes have a higher psychosocial development, quality of life, and mental health. Therefore, it is recommended to consider this psychological component in the sports field. Based on research findings, it can be concluded that enhancing psychosocial development through sports participation leads to improved quality of life and mental health among athletes.
