Abstract
Objectives
Due to the increased financial benefits of success, the current football atmosphere around the world is under severe pressure. Prioritizing results at all levels of football in the shortest possible time has created a culture of "short-term" in professional football. The referee must judge in this new and stressful situation and be able to make critical decisions. Referee decisions are heavily debated, and camera footage from multiple angles is used to debate the correctness of a decision. Good mental preparation can improve the quality of decisions.
Method
A referee who has a stable mood is well aware of mental skills, has a precise focus, and has high knowledge, and can make appropriate decisions even in stressful situations. Therefore, there is a need to take measures to support referees and improve decision-making on the field. Based on this, using the Ottawa Mental Skills Questionnaire, the psychological status of referees was investigated.
Results
The results of completing the questionnaires by the present referees showed that the selected referees of the country do not have good conditions in skills such as visualization and concern about performance.
Conclusion
Based on this, there is a need to conduct sessions to train judges in psychological skills. At a basic level, elite referees should first be provided with mental skills in group and individual form aimed at enhancing their ability to cope more effectively with their job stressors and demands on and off the field. This is to improve their performance (for example, decision-making) under pressure during the season, including when they need to make "fatal decisions" in very sensitive/high-pressure situations.
