Relations of Self- Compassion and Sport Activities Tendency

Abstract
Background:
Higher levels of self-compassion are typically related to greater psychological health as demonstrated by less depression and anxiety and greater happiness and optimism (1). Also, Regular physical activity remains an important behavior for promoting health, postponing or preventing prevalent musculoskeletal disorders. unfortunately, research indicated that physical activity rates decline consistently during the adolescent years (2). A review of physical activity among people diagnosed with depression found that low self-esteem and higher levels of depressive symptoms were associated with lower physical activity (3).
Objective: The aim of this research was to investigate the relations of Self- Compassion and Sport Activities Tendency among medical Sciences college students.
Methodology: The cross-sectional survey was adopted Self- Compassion and Sport activities tendency by using questionnaires through an online survey platform. From 260 available samples, a total of 248 valid questionnaires were collected. The research instruments included basic demographic information and SCS-SF (Raes et al, 2011) and Naji et al (2011). Test reliability was calculated by Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Data were analyzed using descriptive Statistics, kolmogorov smirnov test and Multiple Regression & Pearson Correlation coefficient through SPSS Software.
Results: Five dimensions of Self- Compassion (Self-Kindness, Self-Judgement, Common Humanity, Isolation, Mindfulness, Over-Identification), predicted Sport Activities tendency. Only, Self- judgment did not have the power of prediction of sports activities tendency. Over-Identification had the lowest mean and mindfulness had the highest mean of Self- Compassion dimensions. Sport Activities Tendency was less in singles and Unemployed students than married and employed. Reliability of self-compassion and Sport Activities Tendency questionnaires were 0.85 and 0.90, respectively.
Conclusion: Physical inactivity and its consequences that can be called a pandemic, needs action. According the findings of this research, it is imperative to explore what determinants can help to increase physical activity among college students with emotional problems.
