Abstract
Type 2 “diabetes” is the most common type of diabetes. This type of diabetes is associated with an increase in risk factors for “cardiovascular disorders” including increase in high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, glycosylated hemoglobin, increase in “fasting blood glucose” and lack of “physical activity”. Aerobic activities are mainly used to achieve favorable “metabolic” and cardiovascular effects among the types of endurance exercises.
Objectives
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of eight weeks of “endurance exercise”
activity on blood sugar control and cardiovascular risk factors in “female students” with type 2 in Dashtestan city, Bushehr province.
Methodology
This study was conducted as a semi-experimental study in 2022. For this purpose, 24 female students with type 2 diabetes in Dashtestan city who referred to Bushehr Diabetes Association voluntarily participated as subjects in this research. The participants were randomly assigned to two aerobic (12 people) and control (12 people) groups. The exercise program of the aerobic endurance group included 3 running sessions per week with an intensity of 60 to 80% of the maximum heart rate for 8 weeks and 30 minutes in each session. Weight indices, BMI, fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and Vo2max were measured before and after the intervention. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and independent t test were applied to data analysis using SPSS software.
Results
The LDL-c, TG, HbA1cT and fasting blood glucose indices decreased significantly in the aerobic group after 8 weeks of aerobic exercise; But there was no significant change in the control group. Vo2max and HDL-c increased significantly in the aerobic exercising group. As well, no significant changes were observed in cholesterol, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, weight and BMI in the both groups.
Conclusion
Performing 8 weeks of aerobic endurance activity reduces HbA1c, fasting blood glucose and improves the lipid profile of female students with type 2 diabetes in Dashtestan city. Therefore, it is recommended to perform continuous and regular aerobic endurance exercises for female students with type 2 diabetes in order to improve their condition.
